The Val di Noto Unesco Heritage Site

The late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002. It includes eight towns in the Val di Noto district (Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli), which were hit and largely destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1693. The reconstruction followed the late Baroque taste of the time, which characterises them and makes them artistically unique even today.
