2. Church of St. Michael Archangel

Via Fiumillo – 97018 Scicli, RG

Dettaglio della Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, Scicli

Fig. a

The church and adjoining monastery were rebuilt by Augustinian nuns after their collapse in 1693 (Fig. a).
The church has a three-order façade, convex in the centre, delimited by two columns only in the first two orders. The last order, has a reduced volume in which, at the sides, there are two terraces with iron railings (Fig. b). On the main façade, the church has a single entrance, bordered by two columns with Corinthian capitals set between pilasters, embellished with floral garlands. In the second order, a large window overlooks the entrance (Fig. c), while in the third order, surmounted by a tympanum, is the belfry.
The side entrance is remarkable; preceded by a few steps, it has a splay and neoclassical decorations.
The interior of the church, elliptical in shape, is decorated with stuccoes and paintings (Fig. d).
The nave vault is decorated with numerous stuccoes and frescoes depicting biblical scenes.
On the left side wall is a very unusual organ, richly decorated, with stuccoes representing various musical instruments on its side (Fig. e), while on the opposite wall is a balcony housing the choir (Fig. f).
As in the local tradition, the chequered floor is made of pitchstone and white limestone.
