Apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;unification des fiefs de Modica et de Raguse, suite au mariage entre Isabella Mosca et Manfredi Chiaramonte c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 en 1296, la ville gagne en importance posant ainsi les premiers jalons de son administration et de sa milice. Apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9faite et l\u2019ex\u00e9cution d\u2019Andrea Chiaramonte, le comt\u00e9 passa \u00e0 Bernardo Cabrera en r\u00e9compense de l\u2019aide apport\u00e9e \u00e0 Martin 1er, roi d\u2019Aragon, pour reconqu\u00e9rir la Sicile.<br \/>La ville connut un grand essor tout au long du XIVe s., puis devint le chef-lieu du comt\u00e9 en 1447, apr\u00e8s la r\u00e9volte de Raguse contre Giovan Bernardo Cabrera, fils de Bernardo, qui d\u00e9pla\u00e7a le c\u0153ur du comt\u00e9 \u00e0 Modica. La ville s&rsquo;est ult\u00e9rieurement agrandie sous le r\u00e8gne des Cabrera-Henriquez. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, Modica \u00e9tait constitu\u00e9e de deux grands quartiers : un autour du ch\u00e2teau et de l\u2019\u00e9glise Saint-Georges, l\u2019autre en contrebas de l\u2019\u00e9peron rocheux du ch\u00e2teau, pr\u00e8s des deux rivi\u00e8res et de l\u2019\u00e9glise Saint-Pierre.<br \/>Durant les ann\u00e9es qui suivirent la Contre-R\u00e9forme, compl\u00e9t\u00e9e en 1563, des J\u00e9suites, des Capucins et des Merc\u00e9daires s\u2019y \u00e9tablirent et b\u00e2tirent des \u00e9difices qui montrent l\u2019attention qu\u2019ils pr\u00eataient au nouvel urbanisme par l\u2019introduction de la culture baroque. Les deux art\u00e8res qui longent la rivi\u00e8re, dont le lit a \u00e9t\u00e9 recouvert apr\u00e8s la crue de 1902, deviendront ainsi l&rsquo;axe principal de la ville, quoiqu&rsquo;encore caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par une s\u00e9rie de ponts qui ont disparus aujourd&rsquo;hui et difficilement imaginables dans le contexte actuel. <br \/>Modica fut pratiquement ras\u00e9e au sol par le s\u00e9isme de 1693, puis reconstruite sur le m\u00eame site. Sa reconstruction fut r\u00e9alis\u00e9e sur les structures pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes, c&rsquo;est pourquoi on note aujourd&rsquo;hui l&rsquo;amalgame entre la culture m\u00e9di\u00e9vale et la culture baroque. <br \/>Une autre grande transformation eut lieu apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;unification italienne, car les lois de confiscation des biens de l&rsquo;\u00c9glise firent passer de nombreux couvents \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00c9tat qui les utilisera \u00e0 des fins institutionnelles, comme le couvent Sainte-Marie-de-J\u00e9sus qui fut transform\u00e9 en prison, ce qui comporta la destruction de quelques caract\u00e9ristiques architecturales du complexe monumental. Depuis 2002, deux de ses monuments sont inscrits au Patrimoine mondial de l\u2019UNESCO : l&rsquo;\u00e9glise Saint-Pierre (<strong><strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">1<\/strong><\/strong>) et l&rsquo;\u00e9glise Saint-Georges (<strong><strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">2<\/strong><\/strong>). D&rsquo;autres \u00e9difices du baroque tardif pr\u00e9sentent un int\u00e9r\u00eat remarquable : l&rsquo;\u00e9glise du Carmel (<strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">3<\/strong>); l&rsquo;\u00e9glise de la Madone des Gr\u00e2ces (<strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">4<\/strong>); l&rsquo;\u00e9glise Sainte-Marie de Bethl\u00e9em (<strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">5<\/strong>); l&rsquo;\u00e9glise Saint-Dominique et le couvent des P\u00e8res dominicains (<strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">6<\/strong>); le palais des P\u00e8res merc\u00e9daires (<strong style=\"color: #4054a1;\">7<\/strong>); le
