Ce site accueillait un portique et des habitations, ins\u00e9r\u00e9s dans le contexte d&rsquo;un ancien habitat rupestre, sans doute de type monastique, lequel \u00e9tait constitu\u00e9 de plusieurs grottes, dont la plus grande fut englob\u00e9e dans le corps du couvent et transform\u00e9e en vaste citerne (Fig. a).<br \/>Ce couvent s&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e8ve sur plusieurs niveaux (Fig. b) et se d\u00e9veloppe autour d&rsquo;un clo\u00eetre \u00e0 colonnades, avec au centre le puits octogonal de la grande citerne (Fig. c).<br \/>Il semble que son architecte \u00e9tait un moine franciscain, fr\u00e8re Marcello da Palermo, auteur de plusieurs couvents \u00e0 Modica, dont le couvent Sainte-Anne.<br \/>Ce couvent b\u00e2ti sur quatre niveaux \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 achev\u00e9 en 1669.<br \/>Les dommages caus\u00e9s par le s\u00e9isme de 1693 y sont encore visibles, il fut restaur\u00e9 et continua \u00e0 \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 par les moines jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 l&rsquo;unification italienne. Suite \u00e0 la suppression des ordres religieux et \u00e0 la confiscation de leurs biens (lois d&rsquo;\u00e9version de 1866-1867), le couvent passa dans les mains de la commune de Raguse et servit un certain temps d&rsquo;\u00e9cole et de bureaux. Son abandon graduel et l&rsquo;\u00e9tat d&rsquo;incurie caus\u00e8rent un effondrement partiel du b\u00e2timent en 1943.<br \/>Les travaux de restauration et de reconstruction ont permis de d\u00e9couvrir les ruines d&rsquo;une tour remontant \u00e0 la fin du XIIIe s. Plac\u00e9e le long des murs du Raguse m\u00e9di\u00e9val, et directement reli\u00e9e \u00e0 la Porta dei Saccari, elle fut englob\u00e9e dans la construction du couvent.<br \/>Gravement endommag\u00e9e durant le s\u00e9isme, elle fut reb\u00e2tie par les moines. D\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 la Vierge, l&rsquo;espace entre le tympan bris\u00e9 de l&rsquo;entablement du portail et la grande fen\u00eatre de la tribune des chantres accueille l&#8217;embl\u00e8me des Franciscains r\u00e9form\u00e9s, avec une Vierge \u00e0 l&rsquo;Enfant plac\u00e9e au centre (Fig. d).<br \/>Cette \u00e9glise \u00e0 nef unique (Fig. e) se distingue par la pr\u00e9sence de stucs et de fresques et par le remarquable <em>trompe-l&rsquo;\u0153il<\/em> de l&rsquo;abside (Fig. f).<br \/>\u00c0 la fin des travaux de restauration actuellement en cours, ce complexe deviendra un
