Ces colonnes entourent un somptueux portail d\u00e9limit\u00e9 par une corniche en saillie et par deux festons sur les c\u00f4t\u00e9s qui s&rsquo;enroulent au sommet autour d\u2019une coquille (Fig. c).<br \/>Du premier sanctuaire qui fut con\u00e7u par l&rsquo;architecte syracusain Vincenzo Mirabella, d\u00e9truit par le puissant s\u00e9isme, il reste un des portails sur la fa\u00e7ade lat\u00e9rale c\u00f4t\u00e9 ouest. Ce portail est orn\u00e9 d&rsquo;un tympan bris\u00e9, soutenu par deux colonnes plac\u00e9es sur de hauts pi\u00e9destaux et couronn\u00e9es d&rsquo;un arc d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de motifs entrelac\u00e9s (Fig. d).<br \/>Lat\u00e9ralement, on trouve quatre autres colonnes, deux de chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9, d\u00e9cal\u00e9es en arri\u00e8re par rapport \u00e0 la fa\u00e7ade, tandis qu&rsquo;un clocher rest\u00e9 inachev\u00e9 se dresse sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 gauche de la fa\u00e7ade. L&rsquo;\u00e9glise Sainte-Marie-des-Gr\u00e2ces fut construite sur le site de la d\u00e9couverte d&rsquo;une image repr\u00e9sentant une Vierge \u00e0 l&rsquo;Enfant (Fig. e), peinte sur une plaque d&rsquo;ardoise, jug\u00e9e miraculeuse car rest\u00e9e intacte apr\u00e8s avoir br\u00fbl\u00e9 trois jours dans le feu d&rsquo;un buisson. L&rsquo;image est aujourd&rsquo;hui conserv\u00e9e dans l&rsquo;autel principal de l&rsquo;\u00e9glise. <br \/>L&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur s&rsquo;ouvre sur trois nefs s\u00e9par\u00e9es par des piliers soutenant un entablement o\u00f9 s&rsquo;inscrit la vo\u00fbte en plein cintre centrale, \u00e9chancr\u00e9e de lunettes lat\u00e9rales (Fig.
