Nombreux sont les auteurs qui l&rsquo;ont ins\u00e9r\u00e9 dans les principaux ouvrages sur le baroque sicilien.<br \/>Plac\u00e9 sur le flanc de la colline San Matteo, entre l&rsquo;ancienne citadelle fortifi\u00e9e qui se dresse au sommet et la ville moderne du XVIIIe s.,<br \/>on ne conna\u00eet ni le nom de l&rsquo;architecte, ni l&rsquo;\u00e9poque de sa construction, qui remonte probablement \u00e0 la seconde moiti\u00e9 du XVIIIe s. Comme la plupart des \u00e9difices baroques, le palais Beneventano se distingue par l&rsquo;habilet\u00e9 technique de l&rsquo;utilisation de la pierre calcaire, admirablement trait\u00e9e par les artisans locaux. Anthony Blunt l&rsquo;a d\u00e9fini \u00ab un rare exemple pour sa d\u00e9coration fantastique \u00bb, un palais \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir.<br \/><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">Sa conformation d&rsquo;angle, qui le caract\u00e9rise et le met en valeur, suit la pente de la rue (Fig. b). Les deux fa\u00e7ades sont li\u00e9es par une puissante corni\u00e8re, constitu\u00e9e de pilastres \u00e0 bossage \u00e0 lobes. Le blason couronn\u00e9 de la famille Beneventano, soutenu par deux t\u00eates de Maures \u00e0 bouche ouverte en saillie, est positionn\u00e9 en haut de la corni\u00e8re (Fig. c), tandis qu&rsquo;une statue de saint Joseph est plac\u00e9e sur le bas (Fig. d).<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">L&rsquo;\u00e9difice s&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e8ve sur deux niveaux, le premier \u00e9tant caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par des ouvertures aux clefs de vo\u00fbte orn\u00e9es de mascarons.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">Le second niveau accueille des balcons, munis de balustrades en fer forg\u00e9 <\/span><em style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">en poitrine d\u2019oie <\/em>(Fig. e) qui sont plac\u00e9s au-dessus des ouvertures sous-jacentes et soutenus par des consoles sculpt\u00e9s de motifs monstrueux et grotesques repr\u00e9sentant des animaux fantastiques.<span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">Les figures sculpt\u00e9es, d&rsquo;une originalit\u00e9 absolue, sont dispos\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 \u00eatre admir\u00e9es de la rue, o\u00f9 elles attirent le regard et surprennent le passant<\/span><span style=\"font-family:
